St Mary’s Church, Chiddingstone, Wedding Photography

Discover this 14th-century church

Rebecca & Stephen

Nestled amid Tudor timber-frames and blossom-lined lanes, St Mary’s Church is a living postcard of English village romance. The 14-century sandstone tower rises above Chiddingstone’s National Trust high street, while the nave’s lattice windows pour warm, gold-flecked light onto carved pews below—an atmosphere purpose-built for heartfelt vows and luminous photographs. From confetti beneath the medieval lychgate to golden-hour strolls through surrounding meadows, every corner offers a backdrop that feels both timeless and effortlessly intimate. This case study follows one such celebration, revealing how thoughtful planning and unobtrusive, documentary-style photography can turn a historic village church wedding into an heirloom story told through images.

A Real-Life Love Story

When Rebecca and Stephen chose a beautiful church in the small, historic village of Chiddingstone for their wedding, it wasn't just a celebration—it was a deeply meaningful homecoming. Having flown all the way over from New Zealand to tie the knot, they wanted an intimate ceremony surrounded strictly by their closest family and friends, especially since Rebecca’s family lives right here in Kent.

The story of their day began as they arrived at the church, where I used a long lens from a distance to quietly preserve their private, nervous anticipation before the ceremony began. Inside, soft window light flooded the historic building, allowing me to capture rich, natural colours and the genuine warmth of the room without using any disruptive flash.

After a joyful confetti exit under the Kent sky, we strolled into the nearby meadows for some relaxed couple portraits during the golden hour. Capturing the two of them laughing together as the warm, low sun dipped below the tree line was pure magic—the perfect contrast of timeless elegance and soft, romantic light.

Documentary First

My approach is rooted in documentary storytelling - quietly observing, anticipating and preserving the moments that unfold naturally. Photographing inside St. Mary's Church, I work with the atmosphere of the space, capturing the emotion, the light, the details and the connections between you and the people who matter most.

Lighting Mastery

Every church has its own character, light and atmosphere. My experience photographing inside St. Mary's Church means I understand how the natural light moves through the space - from the way the west window spills soft light across the aisle to the moments when the architecture and atmosphere are at their most beautiful.

Top Tips for Couples

1 / Ring the bells

Book the full peal—twelve minutes of joyous sound adds energy to exit photos.

2 / Confetti choice

Dried flower petals pop beautifully against sandstone; larger pieces drift slower for dramatic frames.

3 / Portrait Loop

A loop through the high street, castle grounds and river bridge takes just 25 minutes and yields three distinct backdrops.
